This is just one more dismal consequence of the abandonment of Radical Reconstruction.
A shockingly small and insular group has control of most aspects of state government, it is true, but similar problems exist in states that were never part of the Confederacy. Many people are using this incident as a vehicle to express bigotry against South Carolina generally, and I don’t think that is fair. I fault the South Carolina Supreme Court for putting us in this disgraceful position, and for refusing to provide the information needed to defuse the situation.
