Do Women Hate Sarah Palin Because She Is “Too Pretty” and “Too Confident”?

Time Magazine thinks so. Well, one Time Magazine writer, and her editors and publisher, anyway. Here’s an excerpt:

What the Democrats learned during the primaries and the Republicans might now be finding out the hard way, I learned at my very academic, well-regarded all-girls high school: that is never to discount the ability of women to open a robust, committed, well-thought-out vat of hatred for another girl.

I don’t hate Sarah Palin but I do hate Time Magazine.

–Ann Bartow

NB: By “I don’t hate Sarah Palin” I do NOT mean I am supporting her or defending anything she says or does. Calm the freak down already.

This is the writer of that Time.com piece, a feminist and a fan of this blog and I defend my right to be funny about women and our tendencies. I don’t hate Sarah Palin either. The piece was inspired by the tone of the debate about her, which struck me as high school-ish. And you, Ann, are SO disinvited to my birthday party. So there.

  2. Ann Bartow says:

Is Belinda Luscombe your nom de Time? I agree with you that there are problems with the tone of the debate about Sarah Palin, but I didn’t think your article was funny, sorry. Warm wishes for a Happy Birthday, though.

I am not going to vote for McCain/Palin, but I don’t think Palin is stupid or evil, and in this clip I find her kind of endearing. Not hating Sarah Palin makes me a bad Democrat and a bad feminist in many quarters, because leveraging her gender to hate on her is what good Democrats and good feminists do, apparently. Cripes I cannot wait for this election to be over.

  3. olivialawrence says:

Comedy is subjective, I’ll give you that. But to say you hate TIME because somebody writes a piece you don’t find funny? As somebody once said Calm the freak down already.

  4. Ann Bartow says:

Actually, the sentence “I don’t hate Sarah Palin but I do hate Time Magazine” was tongue in cheek – what are you, one of those humorless feminists?

  5. olivialawrence says:

Well humorless, obviously, but according to many of the sisterhood, not much of a feminist. Although to be fair, lots of males thought the piece was man-hating too. I didn’t realize only bloggers were allowed to be tongue-in-cheek. D’oh.

  6. Ann Bartow says:

You are making it very hard to hate you. But the article just doesn’t work as satire for me. Partly this is because so much similar stuff gets written entirely seriously. Although I have been a (sometimes tepid) Obama supporter from fairly early on, it was hard to watch what happened to Hillary Clinton and I’m not going to recover from that very quickly. The Supposedly Liberal Doods turned from hating on Hillary Clinton to hating on Sarah Palin with disquieting speed and enthusiasm. Watching other purportedly progressive women join in has been hard too, which I guess is what you were trying to say in your piece, but it didn’t come through for me.
