Even if Sotomayor does not have a very liberal record, I'm not convinced that it's a conservative one either - the article you linked to seems to be saying, more than anything else, that she is very much "a mainstream jurist." It doesn't say enough to convince me she has a conservative slant. Is it possible that the Republicans are fixating on the "wise latina" remark because there's just not very much else to focus on? The issues they raise certainly could imply sexism/racism, but I'm more inclined to think this is simply politics as usual.
